Abu Dhabi: Two Arab men have been referred to court accused of illegally selling growth hormones and endangering the lives of others.

The suspects placed an advertisement via BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) publicising their products. This prompted the authorities to set a trap to catch the suspects. The pair reportedly confessed to being in possession and trading the drug without a licence. If convicted they face a prison sentence and fine.

An official at the Public Prosecutor’s office said such an act was dangerous, especially for young people who buy these products without a prescription or medical supervision in a bid to build muscle.

“These hormones may result in several diseases such as diabetes, heart and kidney expansion and even early death,” the official said.

The source also stated the importance of cooperation between sports clubs, safety and medical institutions to limit this phenomenon among youngsters.

Members of the public are encouraged to report any such activities to safeguard people’s lives.
