Dubai: Two students were sentenced to six months in jail for cursing and threatening six policemen who tried to arrest them after becoming suspicious of them standing beside an ATM machine.

The Emirati students, H.D. and R.S., threatened to kill the policemen and ferociously resisted them when they tried to arrest them after spotting them standing suspiciously beside an ATM at 4am in May in Al Mamzar.

The Dubai Court of First Instance sentenced the duo in absentia after convicting them of threatening to kill the policemen if they detained them, resisting arrest and cursing the policemen in public.

H.D. was convicted of attempting suicide when he slit his wrist with a sharp tool in May.

Presiding judge Mohammad Jamal sentenced the duo in absentia after they failed to appear in court.

Records said the two accused verbally threatened the policemen saying, “We will kill you and set the police station on fire if you arrest us.”

A police sergeant testified that the incident happened at 4am when they saw the duo standing suspiciously beside an ATM machine.

“We stopped the defendants and asked them to present their personal identification documents. They sounded like they were under the influence of drugs as they spoke heavily and incomprehensibly. They also refused to present any identification. When we tried to take them to the police station, they resisted arrest and refused to comply. They threatened to kill us and harm us if we apprehended them. We restrained them and drove them to the police station. Later we noticed that R.S.’ wrist was slit and he bled. He had slit his wrist in reaction to being detained and taken into custody,” claimed the sergeant.

The sergeant’s colleagues confirmed what had happened.

As per the Criminal Procedures Law, the duo is entitled to a retrial as soon as they surrender in court.
