Dubai: An employee has been accused of abusing his duty at a security company and stealing money from women’s purses that were kept in safe custody at a mall’s security desk, heard a court on Monday.

A number of women shoppers were said to have reported to Dubai Police that their money had been stolen from their purses after they had left them at the mall’s security desk in January.

Primary police interrogations exposed that a Pakistani employee, who worked for the security company at the desk in the mall, was involved in stealing the money.

Upon checking surveillance cameras, the 25-year-old Pakistani employee was seen opening purses and taking cash out from the purses.

The man was apprehend and referred to the Dubai Public Prosecution for further investigations.

Prosecutors accused the suspect of abusing his job and stealing more than Dh18,600. According to the accusation sheet, prosecutors said the suspect stole Dh16,800 from one purse and Dh1,800 from another purse.

When he showed up before the Dubai Court of First Instance, the suspect pleaded guilty and admitted that he stole the cash from the women’s purses.

“I am sorry … I have returned the stolen cash,” the suspect contended before presiding judge Ahmad Mohammad.

A policeman testified to prosecutors that the suspect admitted to stealing the cash during questioning and the stolen cash was in local and international currencies.

“He confessed that while he worked at the security desk in the concierge room of the mall, he used to open women’s purses and take the cash out from them,” the policeman told the prosecutors.

Records said the suspect handed the police a written confession in which he admitted to stealing cash from shoppers’ purses and wire the money to his family over a period of 18 months.

Police seized more than Dh18,000 in different currencies upon raiding the suspect’s house.

A ruling will be heard on February 26.
