Dubai A sales representative has been accused of consuming marijuana and also possessing tiny amounts of the substance, which he put in nylon sacks for peddling purposes.

Drug enforcement officers were said to have apprehended the 25-year-old Tanzanian sales representative, K.A., in a sting operation during which he tried to sell marijuana to an informant for Dh3,000 in June.

Drugs prosecutors accused K.A. of possessing drugs for trafficking purposes and consuming marijuana.

Jail wardens did not bring the defendant from his detention and present him before the Dubai Court of First Instance where he was scheduled to enter his plea on Thursday.

According to the charge sheet, prosecutors said the suspect put around 40g of marijuana in tiny quantities in 23 nylon sacks that were found in his possession during the sting operation.

An anti-narcotics police major claimed to prosecutors that an informant alerted them that the suspect possessed marijuana that he intended to sell for Dh3,000 in Discovery Gardens area.

“After obtaining prosecutors’ permission to arrest the suspect in a sting operation, we provided the informant with police money. The informant agreed with the suspect to meet at 8.30pm to purchase the drugs. The Tanzanian suspect did not show up for the appointment … few hours later he phoned the informant and told him that he could find a taxi or a car to meet him at the agreed spot. They agreed again to meet in the same location after midnight. They informant met with the defendant in front of a hotel and apologised again for failing to meet him earlier. The defendant also told the informant that the marijuana that he was about to sell him was of an ‘excellent brand’. The defendant took out the drugs from his pocket and handed it to the informant. Police raided the location and arrested K.A. once he took the police money,” testified the major.

The presiding judge adjourned the hearing until the suspect is brought in from his detention and a lawyer will be appointed to defend him when the court reconvenes on October 29.
