Dubai: A maid has been accused of spiking Coca-Cola with Panadol and taking pills to terminate a pregnancy after she had unmarried sex with her boyfriend.
Dubai International Airport’s paramedic teams rushed the 30-year-old Filipina maid, J.B., to hospital after she collapsed in pain and bled profusely due to the illegal abortion she attempted shortly before boarding a plane for her country in January.
Prosecutors charged the Filipina with having unmarried sex with her countryman, J., who left the UAE a few months back, and trying to get rid of the foetus after taking banned abortion pills.
J.B. entered a guilty plea and confessed that she tried to carry out the abortion herself when she appeared before the Dubai Court of First Instance on Sunday.
“Yes, I had consensual sex with J., who impregnated me. I also took abortion pills,” the Filipina told presiding judge Fahd Al Shamsi.
According to the charge sheet, J. made J.B. pregnant, after which J.B. took six Panadol pills and mixed them in Coca-Cola to drink and also used two pills to abort the foetus.
Prosecutors charged J. with having consensual sex with the Filipina.
A Filipino suspect, identified as M. and who remains at large, was charged with aiding and abetting J.B. to carry out the illegal abortion by selling her the abortion pills.
When asked if she drank the Coca-Cola spiked with Panadol and whether she took the abortion pills, the defendant replied: “Yes, Sir, I did … all I want is to go back home.”
Prosecution records said the maid underwent an immediate operation after she had an incomplete abortion that caused her to bleed.
Records said the Filipina collapsed at the departure terminal after she started bleeding at 6pm.
After she recovered from the operation she claimed to police interrogators that she met J. in July 2014 and they had a love affair, according to records.
She said they had consensual sex in his flat in Satwa several times before he left the country.
The defendant testified to prosecutors that J. is the one who made her pregnant.
“We had sex several times. On the day of the incident, I went to the airport with my sponsor who had cancelled my residency and wanted me to go back home. A week before I collapsed at the airport, I purchased two abortion pills from M. for Dh400 after I met him in a mall. I took Panadol and Coca- Cola and used the abortion pills,” she claimed.
The paramedic, who rushed J.B. to hospital, claimed to police interrogators that the defendant’s sponsor insisted that she had bled because of menstruation and not an abortion.
Presiding judge Al Shamsi will hand out a ruling on April 29.
