Dubai: An engineer has been accused of getting drunk at a nightclub and then molesting a woman who was heading to her hotel room with her husband.

The 28-year-old Singaporean woman was said to have been walking behind her husband in the corridor of the hotel when the 26-year-old Jordanian engineer came out of the nightclub in June.

The husband was a few steps ahead of his wife, according to records, when he heard his wife screaming in the middle of the corridor.

The husband immediately turned around and rushed to the aid of his wife who told him that the Jordanian had groped her before running away.

The Singaporean man rushed to the hotel’s lobby and notified the security guards who stopped the Jordanian man from leaving the place and called police.

Following onsite investigations, police handcuffed the engineer and took him into custody.

Prosecutors charged the suspect with molesting the woman and consuming alcohol.

The suspect pleaded not guilty when he appeared before the Dubai Court of First Instance on Sunday and rejected the molestation charge.

“I did not grope her, it happened by mistake. I accidentally bumped into her in the corridor. And yes I consumed liquor,” the suspect argued when he defended himself before presiding judge Fahd Al Shamsi.

The suspect’s lawyer asked presiding judge Al Shamsi to hear defence witnesses when the court reconvenes on August 20.

The woman testified to prosecutors that the suspect groped her but fled when she yelled at him. The husband told prosecutors that security guards in the hotel’s lobby helped him restrain the suspect until police arrived and apprehended him.
