Dubai: A chef has been sentenced to three months in jail for chewing off part of a waiter’s ear because the latter harassed his girlfriend.

The 23-year-old Lebanese chef, T.A., assaulted the Egyptian waiter in an elevator after the latter stalked his Filipina girlfriend and cursed her in June.

The Dubai Court of First Instance convicted the defendant of assault that led to a three per cent permanent disability to the waiter’s ear.

T.A. pleaded guilty when he appeared in court and contended that the victim had requested money to grant him a written waiver.

Records said the accused assaulted the waiter, bit his ear and caused him a permanent disability without intending to cause the injury. The Filipina said the incident took place after the waiter stalked her and cursed her in the lift when they met.

“He cursed me at 12.30am and I told T.A. He rushed to the waiter’s room where they had a fight,” she testified.

A Chinese witness testified that the incident happened around 1.30am inside the room that he shares with the waiter.

“The defendant stormed into the room and shouted in Arabic. They had a fight and I tried to stop them … I saw blood coming out of the waiter’s ear,” he testified.

Wednesday’s ruling remains subject to appeal within 15 days.
