Dubai: Two cleaners at Global Village’s Yemeni Pavilion who stole 2kg of honey, phone accessories, bracelets and rings from four separate shops have been jailed for one year each.

The Pakistani cleaners — 21-year-old M.A. and 30-year-old S.M. — stole several items from four different shops at the Yemeni Pavilion in March.

A Yemeni businessman, who had a kiosk at Global Village, spotted M.A. wearing a silver ring with a turquoise stone while he was cleaning inside his kiosk, said records.

When the businessman asked M.A. to give him the ring to check it, the cleaner disappeared shortly after he handed him the ring.

The businessman went to warn his fellow kiosk owners before it was later discovered that M.A. and his countryman S.M. had stolen different items from four kiosks.

The Dubai Court of First Instance convicted the duo in four separate cases and jailed them for three months in each case.

Presiding judge Urfan Omar said the accused will be deported after serving their jail terms.

In one case, the defendants stole three phone covers worth Dh120. In a second case, M.A. and S.M. stole three bracelets worth Dh100. They also stole 2kg of honey worth Dh300 in a third case, and in another, the duo stole three silver rings worth Dh600.

The two defendants pleaded guilty in court.

Prosecution records said the defendants stole from four different kiosks between 7pm and 10pm before the businessman saw one of them wearing a stolen ring.

Thursday’s ruling remains subject to appeal within 15 days.
