Gaza City:  A Hamas official said two men detained in tit-for-tat arrests by the Palestinian rivals Hamas and Fatah have been released.

The Fatah-led Palestinian Authority had arrested a Hamas official in the West Bank, which it controls. Hamas forces picked up a Fatah leader in Gaza.

West Bank Hamas leader Nasser Shair said yesterday both men had been released. It was unclear what had provoked the arrests.

Hamas and Fatah are rivals in the Palestinian territories. The groups have repeatedly rounded up each others members as reconciliation efforts have foundered.
