Manama: Iran has arrested two Kuwaiti citizens on spying charges, a local news agency said.

"The two Kuwaiti nationals were fully equipped with spying devices," Bahram Ilkhas-zadeh, the Governor of the Southwestern City of Abadan, said, quoted by Fars News Agency (FNA). “The two have been arrested by the Iranian intelligence ministry forces in Abadan.”

Kuwait in March sentenced two Iranians and a Kuwaiti national, all serving in Kuwait's army, to death and a Syrian and a stateless Arab to life in prison for belonging to an Iranian spy ring.

The court acquitted an Iranian man and the only woman defendant in the high-profile drama. The cell was busted in 2010.

Iran rejected the spy allegations and its foreign minister said Tehran did not interfere in Kuwait's internal affairs.

The standoff resulted in a tit-for-tat expulsion of diplomats and the recalling of ambassadors. However, the ambassdors resumed their posts following a visit by the Iranian foreign minister to Kuwait in May.
