Cairo: Gunmen on a motorcycle killed one Egyptian military policeman and wounded three as they were escorting an army bus in the capital on Thursday, a security official said.

Attacks on security forces have surged since the army ousted Islamist president Mohammad Mursi last July triggering a deadly crackdown on his supporters.

The gunmen struck in broad daylight in the Amireya neighbourhood of east Cairo, the security official said.

As with previous attacks, the army blamed the shooting on Mursi’s Muslim Brotherhood, which the authorities have blacklisted as a “terrorist group” even though it has repeatedly condemned attacks on security personnel.

An Al Qaida inspired group, Ansar Beit Al Maqdis (Partisans of Jerusalem), has claimed most of the deadliest attacks since Mursi’s ouster saying they were in revenge for the crackdown on his supporters, which Amnesty International says has killed more than 1,400 people.

Most of the group’s attacks have been carried out in the Sinai Peninsula, where it is based, but some have been in the capital.
