Washington: The US is to send FBI agents to Sudan to investigate the shooting of an American diplomat and his driver on New Years Day.

The Sudanese government has agreed to admit the team following the death of John Granville, who worked for the US Agency for International Development and his Sudanese driver Abdel Rahman Abbas.

The two were killed when gunmen opened fire on their car as they drove through Khartoum.

A US State Department spokesman the team will "work closely with the Sudanese government to determine who is responsible for these murders and bring them to justice.''

Sudan has said the attack was not related to terrorism.
