Dubai: Donald Trump apparently deleted a tweet about what “an honour” it was meet Palestinian Authority Leader Mahmoud Abbas 13 hours after the pair met at the White House.
According to ProPublica’s “Politiwoops” service Trump also wrote he hoped “something terrific could come out it between the Palestinians and Israel.”
During remarks on Wednesday, Trump said he was pleased to welcome Abbas to the White House and pledged to bring a lasting peace agreement between Palestinians and Israelis.
It’s at least the 12th tweet the president has deleted since he took office, according to Politwoops and USA TODAY analysis.
Some of the deletions have been to correct misspellings or remove words, while others have been to add more context.
It is unclear whether the deletion of tweets violates the Presidential Records Act, which mandates the preservation of all presidential records.
The administration has been advised by the National Archives to capture and preserve all tweets even those deleted.
It isn’t clear why the president deleted the tweet, but the Los Angeles Times reported that some members of Trump’s team have not forgotten about Abbas’ role in pushing a UN Security Council vote condemning Israeli colonies through.
Trump promised to “get it done” when referring to a lasting peace deal between the Palestinians and Israelis—he did not outline how he planned to do this.
Abbas is extremely unpopular among Palestinians and it is unclear whether he would be able to control popular anger if he comprimises on core Palestinian objectives.
