Ramallah: A Palestinian professor who said the Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas and top security chiefs should be sentenced to death, was arrested on Tuesday night.

Abdul Sattar Qasem, professor of political science at Al Najah National University, has been highly vocal in his critcisms against the Palestinian National Authority.

In a recent TV interview, Qasem said that those who collaborate with Israel and coordinate security with the regime, should receive the death penalty as per the Revolutionary Law of the Palestine Liberation Organisation.

Officials interpreted his comments as an open call inciting Palestinians to assassinate the the PNA leader.

A spokesman for the Palestinian Security Forces, Adnan Al Damiri, denied it was a political arrest. However, fellow professor, Mahmoud Abu Rab, says Qasem was targeted for his views.
