Ramallah: Israeli opposition parties have accused Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of being responsible for inciting violence in the Palestinian territories and Israel, citing his backing of raids by Jewish extremists on Al Haram Al Sharif in occupied East Jerusalem.

“The current escalating violence would not have happened if Netanyahu was not prime minister,” said Israeli opposition leader Yitzhak Herzog, adding that the Israeli public was losing faith in Netanyahu.

“If Netanyahu weren’t prime minister, there would not be a wave of current daily attacks.”

Herzog warned that if Israel does not go for a separation plan from the Palestinians, the Israelis will be forced to accept a bi-national state.

Member of the Israeli Knesset, Mickey Levy of the Yesh Atid party, who advocates home demolitions of Palestinians, said the current situation could not continue.

Sparked by Israeli transgressions at Al Haram Al Sharif, the past four months have witnessed violent confrontations between Palestinians and Israeli colonists.

Under a status quo agreement, Jews are allowed to visit the Muslim holy site, but not pray there. However, Palestinians say such Jewish raids are tacitly encouraged by the Israeli government.
