Firefighters battled wildfires in steep valleys of several mountainous areas of Lebanon on Tuesday.

Hundreds of trees were charred and several homes damaged, witnesses said.

There were no reports of casualties in the fires, which started overnight in the Chouf mountains southeast of the capital and in areas to the north and the south of the country, according to local reports.

In the Chouf Mountain town of Deir el-Kamar, fires were raging between the stone houses, forcing residents to evacuate their homes.

Ghayath Boustani, an official in the municipality of Deir el-Kamar, said strong eastern winds had caused the fires to spread and were making it difficult for firefighters to contain them and for helicopters to reach the area.

It was still unclear what caused the fires in the cool mountain region, he said.

Fires are common in Lebanon's green mountains during summertime and are worsened by strong winds.
