Al Ain: Heavy rain pounded parts of Al Ain on Sunday afternoon, giving residents a welcome respite from the intense summer heat.

Clouds started gathering in the afternoon. Moderate to heavy rain hit areas including Al Ain International Airport, Bida Bint Saud and Khatam Al Shakla. There was, however, no rain in downtown Al Ain.

Strong wind accompanied the rain at around 4.15pm and thunder was heard. In just a few minutes everything was drenched, said Mohammad Ali, a resident of Bida Bint Saud.

Strong wind and rain also created problems for motorists who were seen driving slowly and cautiously.

Conditions were hot and humid. Forecasters said the cloud and rain was a result of the monsoon weather that has been affecting India, Pakistan, the Arabian Sea, Oman and the eastern and southern parts of the emirates.

Elsewhere in the country, conditions remained hot and dry with the mercury touching the mid-40s in the afternoon. According to the National Centre of Meteorology and Seismology (NCMS), the weather will continue to be hot and hazy in general on Monday.
