Dubai: Traffic police issued 8,708 fines for offenders exceeding the maximum speed limit by more than 60km/h in the first eight months of 2010. Most of these fines were issued in absentia.

Last year, 8,900 fines were issued in the first eight months of the year for offenders exceeding maximum speed limit by more than 60km/h, while 14,625 fines were issued for the full year of 2009.

"No one can speed to this limit and guarantee his safety," said Major General Mohammad Saif Al Zafein, Director of the General Traffic Department at Dubai Police.

"Drivers who exceed such speed suffer in their own hands," he said.

The offence receives a fine of Dh1,000 in addition to 12 black points and a 30- day vehicle confiscation.

Yearly evaluation

"We don't have plans to exert stricter punishments because the traffic laws are less than two years and a half now. Every year we evaluate the laws and punishments," he said.

"We have witnessed a decrease in fatalities so that means that the existent laws have an effect. We would put stricter punishments for speeding at such high speed and the public has to know that we don't do it for the money, but in order to curb the problem."
