Dubai: The World Health Organisation (WHO) has started reviewing the UAE annual summary report on the eradication of polio from the country.

Dr Mahmoud Fikri, Executive Director for Health Policies at the Ministry of Health, said the WHO's regional office in Cairo convened a three-day meeting with the certification committee on Tuesday. They will discuss the reports efforts of regional countries to eradicate polio.

Dr Fikri indicated that the UAE's report discusses acute paralysis cases that were recorded last year pointing out that around 17 cases in the UAE have been identified by experts from the WHO Polio Technical Committee.

The technical committee comprises of representatives from different health authorities who examine each acute paralysis case carefully and get acquainted to the laboratory tests to ensure these cases carry infections and viruses other than polio.

With regards to the vaccination programme, the Executive Director for Health Policies at the Ministry of Health explained that the programme has added intramuscular vaccination, instead of oral immunisation.
