Abu Dhabi: The Health Authority – Abu Dhabi yesterday urged the public not to listen to rumours about the Mers-Coronavirus.

“The current situation on Mers-Coronavirus, which causes the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome, is not worrisome,” the authority said in a statement.

The authority, along with health authorities and all competent bodies in the country, has taken all the necessary precautionary measures as per recommendations and standards approved by the World Health Organisation (WHO), the statement said.

It confirmed that precautionary tests were conducted for the relatives and all those who were in contact with the infected patients as per international health recommendations.

The health body urged all Emiratis and expatriates to contact official sources when they need to inquire about any information or statistics about people affected by the Mers-Coronavirus.

It advised the public to abide by general hygiene guidelines to prevent the spread of contagious respiratory diseases such as washing hands thoroughly with soap and water or other hand sanitisers, especially after coughing or sneezing, using the bathroom, before and after handling food and during food preparation. The authority urged people to maintain good habits such as a balanced diet, physical activity and enough sleep.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Health said that the WHO confirmed that the virus is not a public health concern and that it does not require any action to ban travel to any country in the world and does not require early screening at ports or imposing any restrictions on trade.

The ministry said that the epidemiological investigation centres across the country are working round the clock to be able to report any cases of the virus early.
