Dubai: Paintings drawn by children from Dubai Autism Centre will be displayed at showrooms of a leading UAE-based automobile company.

The paintings were done by autistic children on board a dhow cruise trip organised by Gargash Enterprises as part of the UAE National Day celebrations.

The dhow cruise was attended by students, their teachers, therapists and the representatives of the organiser. The children started off the festivities with music and they took turns to paint on one canvas while also creating their individual paintings. The pieces of art will be displayed at one of Gargash Enterprises showrooms to represent the energy, openness and creativity radiating through the students community who have lived in UAE.

Wassim Derbi, Marketing Manager of the Gargash Enterprises, said: "We are humbled beyond words after meeting these young children and are delighted to have spent the day in their company. They are gifted beings and are working very hard to have a place of their own in today's competitive world. Today's event was an enriching experience for us and we wish only the best for the children."

Autism is the most common condition in a group of developmental disorders known as the Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASDs). Autism is characterised by impaired social interaction, problems with verbal and non-verbal communication, unusual, repetitive, or severely limited activities and interests.

"This trip has played a fundamental role in our commitment to integrate our students into the society. It was an educational and enjoyable outing; the children had the sensory experience of moving on water and an opportunity to enjoy the beautiful weather," said Lata Roddam, OT Coordinator at Dubai Autism Centre said on the occasion.

She noted that throughout the trip the students were involved in painting activities which helped ease any fears they may have had of water or movement.

The Dubai Autism Centre (DAC) is a non-profit organisation providing information, support, advice and training to professionals and parents of children with autism. Founded in November 2001, the DAC provides services for children with autism and their families.
