Abu Dhabi: Female Dubai Customs inspectors at Dubai International Airport's Terminal 2 Wednesday foiled a bid to smuggle 10.4kg of crystal meth drugs.

The accused smugglers were also female, entering Terminal 2 from a neighbouring country, a Dubai Customs spokesman said.

Ali Al Maghawi, Director of Airport Operations at Dubai Customs, said the inspectors suspected the two female passengers who looked "confused and unstable".

Al Maghawi said that the two women had visited the bathroom and the Free Zone many times, seemingly unnecessarily, and just to gain time for more passenger crowd at check points.

He added: "They didn't know that they were closely watched and monitored".

Al Maghawi said that when their bags passed through the X-ray imaging system, the team of inspectors observed anomalies in the bottom area of one of the women's bags.

"Accordingly, the suspected bag was searched manually by a Customs female inspector. Some secret pockets were found inside the bottom area designed in a clever way to fool the department's inspectors who managed to put a hand on 5.4kg of the crystal narcotic substance concealed inside the bag," said Al Maghawi.

He added: "The same happened with the other lady who hid the narcotics in the same cunning way; the total weight of busted crystal is 10.4kg".

The director alleged that investigations revealed the two suspects work for a gang run by a woman living in a Middle Eastern country.

He said: "The lady in the Middle Eastern country has been directing them through the mobile on how to smuggle and deliver drugs".

Dubai Customs in cooperation with a number of authorities have thwarted many smuggling attempts recently, the organisation said in a statement.
