Dubai Amid retailers’ expectations for bigger crowds, Gitex Shopper was officially opened Saturday by Shaikh Majid Bin Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairman of the Dubai Culture and Arts Authority.

By the afternoon, more people began to flock into the show at the Dubai World Trade Center, hunting for the best deals amid a dizzying array of promotions.

Retailers vied among themselves to grab consumers’ attention—and cash—with colourful displays, bundle offers and sales staff in quirky costumes.

One of the main launches today was LG’s OLED display, which the company claims is the world’s  largest and slimmest OLED TV.

About 120 companies participated at the event Saturday, with some first-timers including French tablet brand Archos.

Customers usually spend the first few days of Gitex Shopper browsing before a buying frenzy begins in the alst four days of the show, retailers say.

While product prices do not differ greatly during Gitex Shopper, it is the freebies and exclusive offers at the events that make the difference, they said.

Retailers expect larger crowds during Gitex this year as the nearby metro gives easier access to the show.
