Dubai: The spirit of Christmas lives on. As the global recession loosens its grip, gifts may not be aplenty, but decorations, goodies and trees are still in high demand.

Gulf News spoke to readers and owners of local bakeries to find out if Christmas trends have changed.

Timothy Reducha feels that while more people budget their money, gifting trends haven't changed much.

He said: "They are in line with electronics and media, which are the darlings in children's eyes. They want the latest. This has not changed over the past 20 years."

Another steadfast Christmas tradition that hasn't been affected is the indulgence in baked goods.

It seems people in the UAE are flocking to bakeries across the emirates. Shops like Sugarbox have received plenty of orders for the three C's: cakes, cookies and cupcakes decorated with icing Santa hats, stockings and snowmen.

Shaikha Mai Al Qasimi, owner of Sugarbox, told Gulf News: "Customers seem to love the cupcakes with the Santa hats that read ‘Merry Christmas' and the traditional Christmas tree."
