grounded: Emirates cancelled its New York flights because of hurricane Sandy

Dubai Emirates airline will partially resume its flights to hurricane-hit New York from Thursday.

In a statement to XPRESS the airline said: “Following the gradual decrease in the impact of Hurricane Sandy on the eastern part of the United States, Emirates flights EK201 and EK202 to and from New York on November 1 will resume as per schedule.”

“However, Emirates flight EK203 which departs Dubai for New York at 2.55am (local Dubai time) and EK204 which leaves New York for Dubai at 11.20am (local NY time) on November 1 remain cancelled. Emirates will continue to monitor the situation closely. Passengers are advised to check emirates.com for further updates, where information is updated every five minutes. Emirates apologises for any inconvenience caused to its customers, however the safety of our passengers and crew is of the highest priority and will not be compromised,” the airline added.

Meanwhile, passengers who had to contend with last-minute schedule changes hoped there will be no further delays.

Laura Marr, a Dubai-based marathon runner who was to fly out on October 30, said: “I am due to be running the New York Marathon on Sunday, November 4. However our flight from Dubai to JFK which was scheduled to depart on Tuesday October 30 was unfortunately cancelled as a result of Hurricane Sandy. Emirates has been wonderful, helping us re-book our flights for November 1 with no extra charges. Now, I just hope this flight departs as scheduled as I’ve been training for five months for the ING New York Marathon.”

“I was to fly out on October 30 but will now have to postpone my trip by two weeks,” said a businessman, adding that it would all depend on when he could reschedule his appointments in New York.
