Abu Dhabi: The Municipality of Abu Dhabi City yesterday urged building contractors to set up temporary fences around construction sites in the capital to protect pedestrians and surroundings from falling debris.

The municipality also reminded contractors to avoid placing construction materials outside the site bounded by the fencing or over utility lines.

If required, contractors must also move this temporary fencing within 24 hours of being informed by the municipality.

Salah Awad Al Sarraj, acting executive director of the town planning sector at the municipality, stressed the importance of seeking permits and building temporary fencing around construction sites.

This was to preserve the health and safety of passersby, and the environment around a construction site.

"The temporary fencing must also follow dimensions approved by the municipality, and be made of iron sheets fixed on a steel frame mounted that is mounted on stable concrete bases," Al Sarraj said.

"The structure should also be light orange, or in another colour approved by the municipality, and be maintained periodically."

According to municipality directions, the space between the panels of the fence must not be more than 5cm, while the gap between the ground and the structure should not be more than 20cm.

In addition, the height of the fence must be at least 2.5m and the width of the entrance less than 5m.
