Al Ain: Strict adherence to safety rules can ensure workers’ protection at construction sites and prevent incidents such as the one in Al Ain that took the life of two Asian labourers on Tuesday afternoon, a senior police official said.

The workers were buried alive under sand when a portion of a deep trench collapsed on them in Al Zaafrana neighbourhood in Al Ain. Two of them, identified as Ram Kumar, 35, and Silver Raj, 28, were later declared dead while a third colleague was rescued alive by the police rescue teams.

The workers were digging a deep trench to lay pipes for a sewage project, said a police official. The bodies of the workers were later recovered and sent to the morgue.

The work supervisor is being questioned by the police to determine any negligence of safety on the site.

Colonel Mohammad Ebrahim Al Ameri, head of emergency and public safety at Abu Dhabi Police, said the collapse of sandy land and under-construction buildings are two serious threats for construction workers. Companies involved in deep digging and construction work must take necessary safety measures to avoid such incidents, he said.
