Abu Dhabi: Respecting environmental protection laws is the first step towards establishing an environment awareness culture and changing old views that regarded man as the master of the environment, to a more reliable concept where man serves the environment and protects it, an official has said.

Lieutenant Colonel Salah Al Ghoul, director of the respect of law cultural office at the general secretariat of Lieutenant General Shaikh Saif Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, made the comments after the end of the third Future energy Summit on Thursday. He added that challenges facing the world are the result of the threats to and abuse of our planet's environment and atmosphere.

He also said that there are challenges because of the geographic locations of some countries, their economic development level and climate changes.

He added that environmental pollution started as a regional problem suffered by a few industrial countries that did not consider environmentally friendly laws and regulations. This blew the problem out of proportion and an international environmental problem resulted, which is causing an impediment for civilisation, as the geographic ecology is linked to both air and water.

Encouragement

Al Ghoul also added that the UN, countries around the world and civil society organisations are working relentlessly to put in place policies that will contribute to ending all types of pollution, by encouraging the culture of preserving the environment and developing environmental awareness which calls for dealing with the planet respectfully and ethically.

He said the UAE has occupied a high place in the comity of nations because of its achievements related to the protection of the environment and increasing public awareness towards its safety.
