Dubai: The Ministry of Environment and Water has suspended a quarry in Fujairah for failing to abide by the operational rules of quarries and for not taking measures necessary to curb dust pollution.

The move is in line with Cabinet decision No 20 of 2008 regarding the regulation of facilities operating in the field of stone crushing and quarries, said Dr Rashid Ahmad Bin Fahad, Minister of Environment and Water.

The ministry classifies quarries into three levels, green, yellow and red, according to their compliance with safety and preventive systems aiming to reduce dust pollution.

The ministry evaluated the work of quarries and found the quarry in Fujairah was violating the Cabinet decision and safety guidelines, and this is why the ministry issued its decision to suspend the quarry and remove it from the green classification to the yellow one, Dr Bin Fahad added.

Quarries that are classified as red are those which do not abide by the rules and do not have dust control systems to reduce dust pollution. A 15-day warning is issued against those which are classified as yellow to correct their situation within the 15 days.
