Dubai: The Electricity and Water Authority in Dubai on Wednesday released a series of conservation tips for residents on how to save energy consumption, while they are away from home.

"DEWA presented these tips in line with the Dubai Government Environmental strategy to achieve the sustainable development and reinforce our role in raising awareness and educating society on conservation measures," said Saeed Al Tayer, Managing Director and Chief Executive Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (Dewa).

‘Tips for Travelling' campaign

Commenting on the ‘Tips for Travelling' campaign, Al Tayer pointed out that Dewa aims to share all important information, tips and knowledge that can help the community to commit to the conservation culture, which will reflect on the consumption level in the emirate.

"It is essential now that communities should know how to safeguard their properties, environment and natural resources, during this period, which will reflect by reducing the consumption rates during summer," he said.

Al Tayer noted that by raising awareness about the importance of protecting our environment and natural resources, authorities will be able to maintain the normal consumption rates during summer that will in turn secure the environment.

Energy-conscious checklist

‘Tips for Travelling' is an energy-conscious checklist that people can use to assist them in securing their property in a safe, responsible and energy-efficient manner when out of the country.

"We want everyone who is going on holiday to turn off their electrical equipment. It is also advised for residents to check the larger utility supply systems such as water tanks and air-conditioning units thoroughly before leaving, as it is known that the wastage of 1 drop of water in every second would lead to wastage of 3,000 gallon of water in the whole year," explained Amal Koshak, Senior Manager, Demand and Tariff Management at Dewa.

Tips on saving electricity consumption while travelling include:

  • Turning off all unnecessary lights and using a timer for security lighting.
  • Unplugging appliances such as computers and televisions and making sure that stand-by buttons are not left on Turning off large electrical appliances, such as ovens and microwaves at the socket and defrosting the fridge before you leave.
  • In bathrooms and kitchens, make sure that faucets and toilets are checked in advance for dripping taps and leakage points.
  • Switching off the air-conditioning unit while away on holiday.
