Al Ain: The civic administration has demolished 175 buildings and structures in Al Ain for violating construction regulations, public safety and the city’s appearance.

The demolition was approved and supervised by a technical committee at Al Ain Municipality and the operation was conducted in the downtown city, Al Faqqa, Suwaihan, Al Arad, Zakhir, Markhania, Al Yaher, Salamat, Al Maqam and Al Hilli districts.

Shaleyah Al Shamsi, head of the supervisory committee, said those structures were deemed a threat to public safety.

Al Shamsi said the structures were built in violation of construction rules and regulations in abandoned, illegal parking lots and that they were mostly factories polluting the environment.

The buildings were identified and short listed for demolition by a team of inspectors, officials from the municipality’s property management and building permits section, and the public health department. Before the demolition and removal of the building, the municipality had run an awareness campaign warning the residents of irregularities and violations of the building rules and regulations.

Al Shamsi said some 10 abandoned shabby buildings were demolished in the Industrial Area of the city, along with 40 plants, 24 car parking lots, and seven factories. He said the inspectors thoroughly checked the age of buildings and the visible cracks and wear and tear.

The operation, said Al Shamsi, was divided into three parts including the identification of buildings and structures, classification of offences, and finally the demolition with the administrative removal orders in accordance with the Law No (2) 2012.

The municipality has also called upon the residents to follow construction, safety and environmental rules and regulations.
