Al Ain: A full-scale waste recycling scheme is to be set up in two districts in Al Ain, after a successful pilot scheme, an official from the Centre of Waste Management in Abu Dhabi said yesterday.

Officials from the centre met with the residents of the Al Masoudi and Falaj Al Haza districts, where the scheme was carried out, to get their views and comments about the recycling programme.

Residents of the districts being tested were pleased with the initiative and cooperated fully, the official said.

"We rely on the population's response to [a] project ... [which] is benefiting individuals and society as a whole," said Hadef Al Mansouri, head of the Al Ain branch of the Centre.

He said the Abu Dhabi government had been providing the resources necessary to reduce the volume of waste in both districts. He added that the reduction of waste volumes is a primary objective of the recycling project.

The door-to-door scheme was launched last December on a pilot basis. Hundreds of secondary school students and volunteers have also helped the centre educate residents on waste recycling.

Two types of waste bins, black and green, were distributed to every household by the cleaning companies Lavajet and MBM Dallah.

At the launch of the pilot project, housewives and domestic helpers in both the districts were educated on how to sort waste into the right bins.

"The project indicates the importance of maintaining cleanliness ... ," said Al Mansouri.

He said the campaign meets international standards and the latest technologies will be used to ensure hygiene and protect both the environment and beauty of the city. The project will also provide raw materials for a number of industries, including the fertilizer industry.

Al Mansouri said the Centre of Waste Management welcomes suggestions or complaints from residents, as the project's success requires their support.
