Dubai: Fears of rising sea water traditionally associated with earthquakes did not materialise Tuesday as Dubai felt the aftershocks of a 7.8 magnitude earthquake in southeastern Iran, say Dubai Municipality officials.

The municipality said in a statement on Wednesday that seismic tremors across the UAE had no special effect on the water levels or wave heights on Dubai shores as per the data shown at various coastal monitoring and warning stations.

Hamdan Al Shaer, director, environment department at Dubai Municipality, said there were no anomalies.

“We have 16 different kinds of monitoring and warning stations across Dubai costal line. None of the systems functioning there has shown any special variations in the water levels or wave heights,” he said.

“The highest of the wave heights recorded at the time when tremors rocked Dubai is that from our monitoring station located in Umm Suqeim 2 area which showed only 0.32m. And it is a quiet normal situation.”

According to Al Shaer, various monitoring networks also suggests that no extra phenomenon had occurred during the time of tremors.

The highest water level recorded during the tremor was from Al Shindaga station which showed only 1.19m, he said.
