Dubai: Significant improvements can be made through interventional therapies in all cases of learning difficulties, Rudolf Stockling, Clinical Director, Lexicon Reading Centre, said.

Stockling said there have been several cases of children who benefit through therapy, learn to cope with their learning difficulties and eventually have very successful academic/professional careers.

He said the improvement of the child depends largely on two aspects: the seriousness of the learning gaps and the intensity of the remedial action that is taken.

“In all cases, it is essential for parents to work closely with teachers and the expert/psychologist. Discovering learning difficulties in a child can be a stressful time and parents can experience a high level of frustration. We usually advise parents to maintain a perspective about the fact that, through this process, their children are actually getting better.”

The expert said in aggravated cases, he recommends the home schooling approach to offer children more personalised support. Home schooling is usually a viable option when children are four to five years behind their learning milestones and need intensive support.

“In these cases we use the base offered by a globally recognised syllabus which is also recognised by local authorities and build on it through offering specialised attention, regular assessment of progress, use of special techniques such as simultaneous multisensory teaching and assistive technology. We essentially engage with every student based on their individual ability and capacity.”
