Abu Dhabi: There are presently 14,000 pupils enrolled in public school kindergartens for the 2011-12 academic year in the emirate, a 14 per cent increase over the number of pupils enrolled last year, the Abu Dhabi Education Council (ADEC) said.

Dr Mugheer Khamis Al Khaili, Director-General of ADEC, noted that there were several reasons for the increase, including the implementation of the New School Model (NSM) launched by the council last year.

Six public schools out of 270 in Abu Dhabi have been chosen to be part of the pilot phase of ADEC's new eLearning programme, the iClass, for the 2011-12 academic year.

"The NSM also focuses on creating bi-literate students, delivering high-quality educational programmes and services, recruiting highly qualified school staff, as well as introducing technology-based learning resources," Dr Al Khaili said.
