Dubai: The Princess Haya Award for Special Education was bestowed on a number of special needs institutions and personnel on Monday.

The Outstanding Special Needs Centre award was presented to the Abu Dhabi Rehab and Care Centre for Special Needs while the Outstanding Speech Therapist award was presented to Abdul Rahman Naqawa from the Jeddah Institute for Speech and Hearing in Saudi Arabia. He also won the Employee of the Year Award.

Under the Ministry of Social Affairs, Mohammad Arhame from the Ras Al Khaimah Rehabilitation Centre won the award for Outstanding Computer Therapist while Assim Othman Khalil from the Fujairah Rehabilitation Centre for Special Needs won the award for Outstanding Music Therapist.

The Sharjah Humanitarian City award winners were Mona Bagh from the Sharjah Autism Centre who won the Outstanding Special Education Supervisor award and Mohammad Fawzi Yousuf from the Al Amal Institute for the Deaf who won the Outstanding Physiotherapist award.

Salah Odeh, also from Al Amal Institute, won the Outstanding Special Educator award.

The Princess Haya Award for Special Education was launched in November 2009 and is the first of its kind in the region.

It recognises deserving individuals in the special needs sector in various categories.

The initiative also aims to encourage people working in the special needs to excel and attain higher service standards in their work.
