Dubai: A visitor has been jailed for 10 years after she admitted that she smuggled in her underwear two kilograms of cocaine that she intended to transfer to Brazil.

The Dubai Court of First Instance also fined the 29-year-old Thai woman S.R. Dh50,000 for smuggling and transporting the drugs in transit through Dubai International Airport.

“Yes I am guilty,” said S.R. when she entered a guilty plea in court. “I brought the drugs with me and I was supposed to take them via transit.”

Presiding judge Ali Atiyyah Saad said the accused will be deported following the completion of her punishment.

The Drugs Prosecution accused S.R. of smuggling, possessing and transporting the cocaine via transit.

According to the accusation sheet, prosecutors said the defendant stacked the drugs in five transparent nylon sacks.

An Emirati policewoman said she was asked by her co-worker to search S.R. during her night shift at terminal three on December 7.

“I didn’t find anything in her purse... I took her to a search room,” the policewoman said. “While searching her personally, I put my hand around her waist. Suddenly she held my hand and asked me to help her. I found nylon sacks full of cocaine hidden secretly in her underwear. She wore a special belt in which she hid drugs as well. When I confronted her with the findings, she claimed that she did not know what she carried. The defendant claimed that she was asked to smuggle the sacks without knowing their content.”

Prosecution records said the woman admitted that she collected $4000 (Dh14,600) for transporting the drug to Brazil.

The primary verdict remains subject to appeal within 15 days.
