Dubai: Police arrested an African woman for allegedly trying to smuggle a large quantity of methamphetamines and heroin while in transit at Dubai International Airport.

The suspect, M.M., arrived from Hyderabad, India and was on her way to Nairobi, Kenya when an airport official became suspicious of her during a routine baggage check.

Noticing strange-looking objects in her luggage, the official searched her suitcase and found fish concealed in the bag's lining. Methamphetamine weighing more than 5kg was found inside the fish while the second suitcase yielded two packages of heroin, weighing 2.6kg.

M.M. admitted during interrogation that a friend in India had asked her to bring the suitcases to Johannesburg.

She said he'd provided her with the tickets and a small amount of money.

She was immediately arrested and referred to the authorities.

Organised dealers

"Most drug smugglers come from unfortunate backgrounds, such as countries plagued with poverty. This makes them an easy target for organised drug dealers who supply them with drugs to be transferred from one country to another," said Major General Abdul Jaleel Mahdi, Director of the General Department for Combating Narcotics at Dubai Police.

Major General Mahdi urged the public to cooperate with the authorities in reporting drug smugglers, dealers and abusers.
