Abu Dhabi: Two Arab men accused of convincing women that they could solve their marital problems by practising sorcery have been jailed pending their trial.

The duo were arrested at a hotel following an investigation. The arrests were made after a report was received that the men had tried to con a woman of Dh15,000 in exchange for their services.

Another suspect is accused of driving the two men between various emirates for Dh500 in order for them to commit the offences.

The duo admitted to cheating women suffering from marital problems by telling them they could solve their issues for a fee ranging from Dh4,000 to Dh7,000.

Incense, black magic scripts and talismans were found in the men’s hotel room.

Recently, an Arab who entered the UAE on a visit visa was arrested for using black magic 10 days after arriving in the country. The 38-year-old claimed to possess the ability to reunite people and make them richer using ‘supernatural abilities’. He also mainly targeted women. Police subsequently issued a warning to residents against falling victim to such scams.

People are urged to report any suspicions they have regarding such activities and to refrain from any involvement.

Last year, the Federal National Council called for tougher penalties for those practising sorcery, saying that the practice goes against Sharia.
