Dubai: A housemaid is in police custody after a medical check-up for her residence visa revealed she was pregnant, police said on Monday.

Police said the Filipina maid was arrested two months after arriving in the country. According to police the maid had been working for her sponsor for two months before being taken for a medical check-up. Certain categories of employees, such as maids and nannies, have to undergo a pregnancy test before they can obtain their visa.

Police said doctors at the clinic discovered she was two months pregnant.

The housemaid, identified as M., has been detained at Bur Dubai police station for the past two months.

Police said the housemaid claimed that she was raped by an Indian taxi driver a few days after arriving in Dubai.

She told police she did not tell her sponsor about the incident.

According to police the case is under investigation.

“We are not sure if she got pregnant in her country or she got pregnant here in Dubai,” police said.

The housemaid’s Arab sponsor told police that he had found the housemaid through a labour recruitment agency.

The sponsor said they waited a couple of months before applying for the housemaid’s residency visa to ensure her work was up to standard.

Police said that the case has been transferred to the public prosecution.
