Dubai: Police have praised benevolent community members who have helped out inmates to settle their financial liabilities.

Major General Mohammad Hamid Al Suwaidi, Director of the Punitive Institutes in the Dubai Police Department, lauded the work of community members in alleviating the hardship of some inmates, especially those who are serving time because of civil cases entailing payment of money to other individuals or parties.

The Human Services Committee which channelled the money from philanthropists from the UAE and around the world were also praised by the official.

Last year, the committee assisted 1,502 inmates to pay a sum of Dh1,645,022.

Al Suwaidi said the inmates were chosen after looking at their financial status.

Lieutenant Colonel Marwan Abdul Kareem Gulfar, the head of the humanitarian committee said that the committee helped solve problems of inmates of different nationalities.

The committee provided Dh356,639 to buy 283 air tickets, settled 34 financial cases worth Dh322,231.

The committee also offered Dh800,000 as blood money to four inmates in cooperation with the Noor Dubai Channel.
