Dubai: A 27-year-old man arrested for alleged possession of 6.5 kilogrammes of hashish yesterday admitted he had the narcotic in his car, but denied he was selling it.

At the same time, the defendant, identified as A.H., told the court, the amount of hashish seized by the police was just 1.6 kilogrammes which he claims is for his personal consumption.

"I only take hashish but I don't sell. The anti-narcotics police seized 1.6 kilogrammes hashish in my car and not 6.5 kilogrammes as they claimed," the defendant, who doesn't have documents to prove his identity, said when he appeared before the Dubai Court of First Instance.

Prosecutors charged A.H. with possessing and trafficking hashish.

A 31-year-old Pakistani watchman, A.A., who was charged with aiding A.H. also pleaded not guilty.

Prosecutors also accused two Pakistanis, 21-year-old R.N. and 31-year-old A.D., with permitting others to take drugs. R.N. and A.D. denied their charges and pleaded innocent when they defended themselves before Presiding Judge Hamad Abdul Latif Abdul Jawad.

Meanwhile, a 28-year-old Omani businessman, K.R., denied the charge of possessing a hashish-laced cigarette weighing 0.9 grams.

"I am not guilty...[the] police busted me as soon as I arrived from Oman. They maliciously [framed] me [up] in this case," said K.R.
