Sharjah: A lioness was seized from a home in Al Qarain area of the city.

The animal was seized by the The Environment and Protected Areas Authority (EPAA) in collaboration with Sharjah Police and the Municipality.

A specialised EPAA team trained in handling and dealing with predatory animals went to the house and caught the lioness, said Hana Saif Al Suwaidi, director of the authority.

She said the authority had received 60 complaints over the past few months from residents concerned about dangerous animals living in nearby homes.

Anyone found to be illegally in possession of a prohibited animal will be fined Dh100,000.

The authority appeals to the public to abide by the Ruler’s order and the Executive Council’s resolution because the dangerous and predatory animals pose a threat to the safety of residents in the emirate.

The move is in line with administrative order number 15 of 2014 by His Highness Dr Shaikh Sultan Bin Mohammad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, banning the possession of dangerous and predatory animals.

The confiscation of the lioness is also in line with the Executive Council’s decision number 30 of 2014 on regulating the possession of dangerous and predatory animals in the emirate.
