Dubai: A Sri Lankan housemaid Monday admitted in court that she stole Dh325,000 worth of valuables and cash from her employer, who is a commissioned diplomat of the Australian Government

Prosecutors accused the 37-year-old housemaid, N.C., [who is detained] of stealing jewellery, electronics and cash money from the Australian diplomat's villa.

"I stole. I took the valuables and money," admitted N.C. when she pleaded guilty and confessed to her charges before Presiding Judge Hamad Abdul Latif Abdul Jawad at the Dubai Court of First Instance.

According to the chargesheet, prosecutors accused N.C. of stealing five necklaces and four gold rings, female's silver watch, seven pairs of earrings, three gold bracelets, two mobile phones, digital camera, a children's electronic game and cash.

The diplomat testified to prosecutors that the suspect was not on his sponsorship and that she worked for him one month before the theft.

"I rushed back home as soon as my wife informed me that the housemaid robbed her jewellery set and absconded … I reported to Jebel Ali Police Station that she wasn't on my sponsorship and that she was purposely delaying handing us her passport to stamp the visa. She didn't break any drawer and she stole Australian $100,000 worth of valuables from the bedroom and absconded," the diplomat claimed in his prosecution statement.

A Yemeni police corporal testified that an informant alerted them that the defendant was staying at her compatriot friend's house in Bur Dubai from where she was arrested." A verdict will be heard on May 31.
