Dubai: Dubai Police arrested 28 housemaids for alleged involvement in operating a brothel, recently. The arrest comes as part of police's stepped up campaign to combat prostitution.

According to Brigadier Khalil Ebrahim Al Mansouri, Director of the general department for criminal investigation of Dubai Police, CID received information from sources about Filipina housemaids, who had allegedly fled from their sponsors and were suspected of working as prostitutes.

Interrogations suggested that the women were operating in Deira in a single network thought to be operated by one of the arrested female suspects.

End of issue

"The private campaign is running continuously to put an end to this phenomenon. The programme operates based on information we receive from the public and from investigations," Lieutenant Colonel Ahmad Humaid Al Merri, Director of the criminal investigation division of Dubai Police.

"I urge the public to cooperate with us and if they suspect any illegal activities in their neighbourhood to contact us," he said.

Recently, Dubai Police conducted a number of raids reaching in almost 50 apartments in International City following information about running of brothels.

A series of gang fights among operators resulted in the murder of an Indian gang member and numerous arrests. During the raid a police officer was injured as the gang members used swords and knives.
