Abu Dhabi: An doctor must pay Dh140,000 compensation for damaging a boy’s hearing during an operation, the Abu Dhabi Court of Appeals heard.

The boy lost 70 per cent of his hearing in one ear, according to a team of medical experts from the Abu Dhabi Judicial Department, who examined him to determine the extent of the damage.

The court cleared the hospital where the operation took place of any wrongdoing. It was not immediately accountable for the action of its employee, the doctor, the court ruled, and had only been sued because of his actions.

The doctor was ordered to pay Dh14,000 in temporary compensation to the victim. The lower courts had ruled that the plaintiff receive Dh100,000 in physical damages. However, the victim’s family refused to settle for that amount and therefore appealed the verdict.
