Abu Dhabi: Some 235 e-crimes described as "online scams or electronic pirating" were reported in Abu Dhabi last year, Abu Dhabi Police has said.

They include various forms of online scams, theft of bank accounts and credit cards and selling of illegally recorded phone calls.

A four-day seminar touching upon e-crimes took place in Abu Dhabi, presided by Major General Mohammad Al Awadi Al Menhali, director of operation room of Abu Dhabi police.

Brigadier Maktoum Al Sherifi, director of Police Capital, called for solidarity to combat all types of e-crimes to safeguard the society.

Awareness

He confirmed that Abu Dhabi Police is fighting these crimes and trying to prevent them by raising awareness among the public, creating technical labs and setting up monitoring teams.

"An e-crimes division has been created in 2004 specialised in investigating and collecting data," said Colonel Rashid Bu Rashid, head of organised crime section in Abu Dhabi police.

Advanced training

"Officers in this division got the most advanced training sessions inside the UAE and abroad which help them do scientific investigations.

The detrimental effects of digital prostitution, children sexual abuse, the blind imitation by children of what they see over the internet and the negative impact of technology on students were topics of the seminar.
