Dubai: A worker has been accused of molesting a 10-year-old girl in a supermarket while her mother was busy picking fruits and vegetables.

The 31-year-old Pakistani worker, Q.M., was said to have stood behind the Filipina and groped her while her mother was putting the fruits and vegetables in the trolley in October.

Jail wardens did not bring the defendant from his detention and produce him before the Dubai Court of First Instance where he was scheduled to enter his plea on Wednesday.

The girl’s mother testified to prosecutors that the incident happened when she was shopping in Al Jaffliya.

“I was busy shopping at the fruits and vegetables section and my daughter and seven-year-old boy were present with me. My children were right behind me when my daughter came to me with a pale face, She was frightened and quivering. She claimed to me that one of the workers came from behind and touched her indecently. She pointed her finger towards the suspect who was standing nearby.

“I walked up to him and asked him what he did to my girl… he immediately told me, ‘I am sorry’. Then I asked him why had he apologised if he had not done anything wrong. Then I asked to meet his supervisor and when we checked the surveillance cameras, the footage clearly showed him groping my girl,” the mother claimed to prosecutors.

Records said police arrested the defendant shortly after the mother reported the matter.

Meanwhile the girl alleged in her prosecution statement that once she felt the defendant groping her, she turned around and spotted Q.M. removing his hand quickly.

Presiding judge Ali Attiyah Sa’ad adjourned the case until Q.M. is brought from detention on December 24.
