Dubai: An Egyptian man appeared in court on Wednesday on charges of sexually assaulting a Belarusian woman.

Records state the two met on the internet to discuss business prospects in Dubai.

The woman, E.Z., gave the man her phone number and told him she would be in Dubai in May. The suspect, A.M., called her the day after she returned and proposed a meeting in her apartment at Jumeirah Lake Towers to discuss business.

According to records, the woman’s friend was also present in the apartment but left when the man went to the restroom. The Egyptian then allegedly forced himself on her, saying it was important they got to know each other on a personal level before getting into professional dealings.

The woman said she rejected A.M.’s advances and ran to her bedroom to call the police. The suspect allegedly followed her and pushed her on the bed and raped her for about 30 minutes.

‘Ran naked’

“I managed to flee from him,” she said. “I ran naked out of the apartment to the elevator.” Two Asian men were in the elevator when the suspect and the naked woman entered it.

A witness said when the elevator stopped on her floor, she saw A.M. yelling at the frightened woman with two Asian cleaning staff in it.

The witness said: “I did not enter the lift and was walking back to my apartment when the distraught woman came out of the elevator. I asked her what was wrong but she wouldn’t stop crying. I called the police when I went to my apartment to bring some clothes to cover her up.”

The next hearing in the case is on February 9.
