Widening an accident-prone turn along Delma Street, Abu Dhabi, would give motorists some peace of mind, according to Gulf News reader Mohammad Aquib Hassan Khan. Image Credit: Mohammad Aquib Hassan Khan, Gulf News reader

The photograph (above) is a recent one of a turning on the road near my house in Delma Street, Abu Dhabi. I had written about the situation in a community report in Gulf News last December.

I considered my last report [to be] a joint effort with Gulf News that touched on the need for patience in today's hectic world, especially in the wake of the global economic downturn.

After my previous report was published, I noticed that many drivers were extremely careful and patient at the turn, but there are always exceptions!

This particular photograph, taken from my house, is of an accident that happened in March. I was at home at the time but I am not sure how many [such accidents] are happening at other times.

There was a [long] trail of cars held up because of the accident — imagine the amount of money lost because of this [wasted time]! Kindly also note the turning angles of the other cars.

I reiterate that the concerned authorities must look into the issue and kindly redesign the turning or, for the time being, at least widen the turning space, so that two vehicles can comfortably turn without the risk of an accident.

This will help save precious lives and the precious time of motorists who are not at fault themselves. Also, it would ensure that local residents who are invariably disturbed by the persistent honking of motorists at this bottleneck will get some peace.

On the other hand, I would like to request other motorists to bear something in mind: you may be confident that you are a safe driver and will not meet with an accident, but do not think the same about other drivers. Maintain safe distance. Happy living!
